  Current work:

Each piece in the "Tension Series" is created using
traditional photographic chemicals, dispersed with
human breath onto light-sensitive black & white
photo paper. The surface is exposed to brief low
levels of sunlight and incandescent light as the
chemicals are applied. A bubble, creating an "air
resist" to D-72 Dektol and ammonium thiosulfate,
acts as a vehicle for application, introducing an
element of inherent unpredictability to the creative
process. After the work has dried it is then scanned
at high resolution and manipulated.

My photographs explore the tension between control
and chaos. In each piece I examine the relationship
between the artist's manipulation and the natural
unconstrained forces of the medium.

Critical to my work is the process of titling pieces
based upon their specific visual elements. I have
developed a system of nomenclature that reflects
conceptually the tension in the work between that
which can be controlled and that which cannot.
Each photograph contains within its title an encoded
self-definition. Every number and character in the
title directly corresponds to a visual component.
The name, therefore, serves not only to describe
the work, but also to document the visual results
of the creative process. Theoretically, if one could
"read" a title, one could reconstruct the piece.
